A cyst is a pocket of tissue that may contain fluid, other substances, and even air depending on its location and type. They can grow anywhere on the body, including on or under your skin and inside your body, as well. Cysts on the skin are caused by a number of factors, which may include things like hormone changes, bacteria, oil, and dry skin cells trapped within pores. They can be sebaceous cysts, which develop in the sebaceous gland when the gland is blocked or damaged, or they can be epidermoid cysts, which are small bumps below the skin that are usually painless and harmless. Many people – especially teens – also experience cystic acne.
You should see a doctor immediately if your cyst grows rapidly, becomes infected or painful, causes irritation, makes you feel self-conscious, or occurs in a location like a finger or a toe. Premier Dermatology offers numerous cyst removal options depending on the cyst type. These include injections directly into the cyst designed to “dissolve” them, incision and drainage, and even minor surgery to remove the entire cyst.
