Birthmarks come in many different shapes and sizes, ranging from tiny and barely noticeable to exceptionally large and dark in color. Some birthmarks are virtually unnoticeable and create no undue stress for children, but others may be unsightly or raised, which can create a risk of injury and infection.
The best way to learn more about birthmark reduction or removal is to meet with a pediatric dermatologist early in your child’s life. Certain birthmarks, such as deep hemangiomas or strawberry hemangiomas, may need to be removed before they can pose any significant risk or cause your child substantial pain. Others, including port wine stains or café au lait stains, can be lightened with the use of lasers or other dermatologic treatments over time.
